Whenever we have a break or feel tired and need some energy, some here at JDI go out onto the terrace and absorb the green energy of our little farm here in Akasaka. Even just giving water to our plants and vegetables is fun.
The most amazing thing is - besides seeing and being able to eat the fruits of our work - to watch the vegetables grow and move on their own. What probably most moved us were the cucumbers. You can see that they were very small when we planted them... just a few leaves here and there.
After only a week their size was more than double - the leaves more than three times their original size. Small tentacles came out and if you would look at them the first days and wouldn`t know cucumbers, you wouldn`t know what they are for. Seemed like useless and helpless green arms.
After another week the cucumber plants are grown high and healthy. It is fantastic to see them grow everyday steadily and to imagine what delicious cucumbers they will carry.
The "useless" tentacles are the most interesting of them all. They wander around and try to find something to hold onto and if they did then they steadily wrap themselves around the pole that we put there for them. They are moving so fast, I guess you could watch while they are coiling around the poles.
Natures power and will to grow is fascinating and inspiring indeed. You cannot have that by buying veggies in the supermarket!
Kataoka-san bought more planters - we are getting serious farmers now! ;)
Today we planted three different kinds of radish and salad. Two herb planters are established (rosemary, basil and stevia) and one more is prepared for mint and probably chamomile.
Looking forward for herb tea and fresh salad!
Yours,
Manuel
